At Driversmate and HGV Drivers Group, we believe in giving back to those who have served. That’s why we proudly supported Fox Bravo Overland (FBO) during Operation Southwestern Spirit, a 10-day overland adventure aimed at fostering healing, connection, and growth for military veterans and first responders.

The Mission Behind Fox Bravo Overland

Fox Bravo Overland is an off-road adventure team consisting of U.S. military and law enforcement veterans. They create opportunities for veterans and first responders to engage in team-based overland travel and adventure. Their programmes are designed to reconnect participants with their communities, rebuild camaraderie, and promote mental and physical well-being.

Operation Southwestern Spirit brought together veterans and first responders from the US, UK, and New Zealand, many of whom face significant challenges such as PTSD and physical disabilities. Through the shared experience of overland travel, participants were encouraged to face their fears, find support among peers, and rediscover their strength.

Campfire Healing and Camaraderie

Each evening, participants gathered around the campfire to reflect on the day, share stories, and support one another. By the end of the trip, strangers had become a family.

💬 “I thought I was alone, but now I realise many others are like me and can support me, and I can support them.”

The trip wasn’t just about adventure—it was about healing. Surveys conducted before and after the trip revealed improvements in mood, energy levels, and optimism. For some, this trip was a lifeline, showing them that they are not alone and that there is hope for the future.

Moments of Reflection

During the journey, the group honoured significant moments, including a heartfelt tribute on September 11 to those lost on 9/11 and the lives affected since. Participants shared how this day had shaped their lives, further strengthening their bond.

On September 12, the team reflected on the journey of Ben Parkinson, a UK Army veteran who survived catastrophic injuries in Afghanistan, symbolising resilience and strength.

The Impact of Overland Adventures

For many participants, the trip offered a sense of belonging that had been lost after leaving service. One teammate shared how this was the only place he felt like he was “back on the team,” while another credited the experience with saving his life during one of his darkest times.

This reinforces the transformative power of overland adventures for veterans and first responders, providing not only physical challenges but also an avenue for mental health recovery and community building.
